Privacy Policy

The short version. The memories you keep are saved to your account, so they come back on a new phone. We do not use advertising or analytics of any kind. We do not sell anything about you to anybody. Your account holds your email address and the handful of answers you give during setup — and you can delete the whole thing from inside the app in two taps.
Memories are written and illustrated by AI services. To make one, we send the year, the country and town, and the choices you pick in the app to Anthropic (for the writing) and Google (for the pictures). We never send your name, email or account. Neither company uses what we send to train or improve its models. Details below.
Notifications are off until you turn them on. If you do, OneSignal delivers them, and we keep a little about when you use the app so we send at most two a week. Details below.

What we collect
Your account
Yestara requires you to sign in with Google. The app does not have a signed-out mode: your setup answers belong to your account rather than to a particular phone, so a new device or a reinstall finds them again. When you sign in, we store one record about you:

You can see and change every one of those answers in the app under You → Change your answers. Changes are saved to your account immediately.
Your memories
The memories you keep are saved to your account. When you keep a memory, its writing, its details (year, place, theme and moods) and, if it has one, the photograph made for it are stored with your account, so they come back when you sign in on a new phone, after reinstalling, or after clearing the app's data. Memories you make and do not keep stay only on your phone.
They are used for one thing: giving them back to you. We do not read them, analyse them, share them or use them to train anything. They are held against your account identifier, not your name, and only your own signed-in app can fetch them. Letting a memory go in the app removes it from your account, and deleting your account removes all of them.
If you report a memory
Every memory has Report this memory beneath it. A report sends us the reason you choose, anything you add, and that memory's words and the details it was made from (year, place, theme and the AI models used) — not its picture. A report is not linked to your account: it carries no name, email or account identifier. We use reports to review and improve what the AI makes, and each one is deleted after 180 days.
If you subscribe
Payments are handled entirely by Apple, Google or Samsung — we never see your card details. We use RevenueCat to tell us whether a subscription is active. RevenueCat receives your account identifier (the random id, not your email or name) and the purchase record from the store, so a membership follows your account to a new phone and our server can check it before making a member's memory.
If you turn on notifications
Yestara asks once, after you keep your first memory, and nothing below happens unless you say yes. Until then the notification service in the app is switched off and your phone is not registered with anyone.
If you turn notifications on, OneSignal delivers them. It receives:
- your account identifier (the random id, not your email or name), so a notification reaches your phone;
- what its software collects from any app that uses it: a push token for your phone, the phone's model, operating system, language, time zone and mobile carrier, the app's version, your country and IP address, and when and how often you open the app;
- five labels we set: the decade of your latest memory, how many memories you have kept, the date you last made one, whether you are a member, and whether you are new, active or away.
Our server keeps, for the same purpose: your phone's time zone, when you last opened the app, a reference to one of your memories (its id, its year and the kind of moment) so a notification can open it, and when we sent you notifications. It also reads the festival from your setup answers to know when your festival is close. OneSignal never receives your festival, the words of any memory, or where you grew up.
A notification names a year, a kind of moment or your festival — for example, "A monsoon evening from 2005 is still here." It is shown on your lock screen, where people near you can see it. It never includes anything you typed. We send at most one a day and two a week, between 9am and 9pm your time, and fewer if you stop opening them.
To make trending notifications ("Monsoon evenings are everywhere right now"), our server counts how many memories are made of each kind each day. The count carries no account or identifier, and deletes itself after three days.
What we do not collect
- No advertising. There are no ads in Yestara and no advertising identifiers are read.
- No analytics. The app contains no analytics, attribution or crash-reporting SDK. We cannot see which screens you visit. Only if you turn on notifications do we, and OneSignal, know when you open the app — described above.
- No location. "Where did you grow up" is a question you answer, not something we detect.
- No contacts, no microphone, no camera.
- We do not sell or share your data with anyone for their own purposes.
How memories are made
When you make a memory in the app, Yestara asks two AI services to create it: Anthropic writes the story, and Google (its Gemini API) makes the picture. Your phone sends the request to our own server first, and our server passes it on.

What the AI services do with it
- Anthropic processes the request to write the story, and deletes it within 30 days — or keeps it up to 2 years if it is flagged for breaking Anthropic's usage policy. Under Anthropic's commercial terms it is not used to train its models.
- Google processes the request to make the picture. We use Google's paid service, under which Google does not use the request or the picture to improve its products. Google keeps a log for a limited time solely to detect abuse and meet legal obligations. We ask Google not to store the request for later use.
- Both act on our instructions to produce the memory you asked for. Neither receives anything that identifies you.
What our server keeps
Our server keeps no copy of the request, the story or the picture. It records how many memories your account has made this month and today, so it can hold each plan to what it includes; those counts delete themselves shortly after the month or day they belong to ends. For each memory it also keeps a random reference for two days, so a memory's story and picture are counted once. Our logs record whether a request worked and how long it took — never the place, the story or the picture.
If a service is unavailable, the app makes the memory from a library of writing and photographs that ships inside it, and nothing is sent.
Where your data is kept
Account records, including your setup answers, are stored on Amazon Web Services in Mumbai, India (ap-south-1), encrypted at rest and in transit. Sign-in is handled by Amazon Cognito. The memories you keep, and their photographs, are stored there too, with your account.
Making a memory sends the details listed above outside India. Anthropic and Google process them on their own infrastructure, which includes the United States. Everything is encrypted in transit.
If you turn on notifications, what OneSignal receives is processed by OneSignal, including in the United States. What our server keeps for notifications stays in Mumbai with your account.
How long we keep it
Your account record and setup answers are kept until you delete your account, and are then removed. The memories you keep are kept until you let them go in the app or delete your account. Memories you make and do not keep live only on your phone, and uninstalling removes them. The daily count of memories made is deleted after two days. What the AI services keep, and for how long, is described under How memories are made.
What our server keeps for notifications is deleted as soon as you turn notifications off or delete your account, and in any case 90 days after you last opened the app. Deleting your account also deletes you from OneSignal. Turning notifications off stops OneSignal receiving anything more, but it keeps what it already had until you delete your account.
Your choices
Change your answers
In the app: You → Change your answers. Every setup answer can be corrected or replaced, and the change is saved to your account.
Turn notifications off
In the app: You → Notifications → Turn off, or in your phone's settings.
Delete your account
In the app: You → Delete account → Delete account. This removes your account record, your setup answers, what we keep for notifications, you from OneSignal, and everything Yestara has stored on the device. It cannot be undone.

Your rights in India
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 you may ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, or erase it, and you may complain about how we have handled it. Mallikarjun Tr is the data fiduciary. Our grievance contact is mallikarjuntrmalli@gmail.com, and we will respond within 30 days.
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, the equivalent rights under the UK GDPR and GDPR apply and the same address reaches us.
Children
Yestara is for adults aged 18 and over. It is not directed at anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly create accounts for them. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Yestara handles your data, we will update this page and change the date at the top. For anything significant — such as letting you upload your own photographs — we will tell you inside the app before it takes effect.
